Hello and welcome to July's Corporate Innovation newsletter.

Brooklyn

This month we’re taking inspiration from New York City’s second largest borough; Brooklyn, home to a thriving hub of high-tech start-ups, innovators and entrepreneurs, postmodern art and design, and a mecca for small artisanal food and beverage producers.

While tourists tend to flock to the globally recognised island of Manhattan, the locals know that Brooklyn isthe place to be. As well as amazing attractions and some of the best parks in New York City, it offers an eclectic mix of neighbourhoods, ranging from the high-end DUMBO (where the Soho House Group have recently opened their newest private members club, DUMBO House), cutting edge Williamsburg (famed for its indie music scene, vintage shopping, art and nightlife), to the beachfront Coney Island and its amusement parks.

Food & Beverage Artisans

Montauk Juice Factory

Montauk Juice Factory

In recent years, Brooklyn has seen an explosion of small food and beverage production companies. Everything from handcrafted ice cream and hot dogs to coffee, sake and beer, some truly innovative and inspiring projects are appearing alongside the great restaurants and food markets. Many of these small businesses are conscious, community-led, environmentally-friendly organisations.

Montauk Juice Factory for example, has a mission to provide the freshest, most nutrient-dense fruit and veggie juices on the planet. Their plant based detox and revive juices are cold-pressed, raw, and organically grown and available as a 3,5 or 7-day subscription. They believe that food is meant to be medicine and are dedicated to giving back to the community as much as possible by supporting local businesses, farmers and families.

This vision inspired a ‘high vibe’ café called ‘The End’, located in the heart of Williamsburg. The founders set out to spread spiritual awareness and a feel good philosophy with bright, raw juices such as their speciality Unicorn Latte (using Montauk Juice Factory products as a base), superfoods, herbs, roots and spices from ancient wisdom and traditional cultures, mixed with non-dairy mylks.

Brooklyn Kura - Craft Sake

Two Sake microbreweries have also appeared in Brooklyn with the aim of demystifying sake and making it more accessible to the American people. Brooklyn Kura makes exceptional American Craft Sake and is the first Sake microbrewery in the whole of New York. And hot on its heels is the soon to be opened SakeBrooklyn Brewing Company which will be offering premium sake to the masses.

But it isn’t just drinks that the vibrant neighbourhood is innovating on: The Brooklyn Hot Dog Company, set up in 2012, has pioneered 5 varieties of healthier and more flavourful hot dogs by avoiding nitrates and fillers and using quality, antibiotic-free meats and natural casings. And in the neighbourhood of Red Hook, the Ample Hills Creamery opened in spring 2011 making ice-cream the old-fashioned way, slowly by hand with playful, whimsical flavours such as Ooey Gooey Butter Cake and Snap Mallow Pop.

StrongArm Technologies

Tech Start-ups

In the areas of technology and human experience, two companies are also worth mentioning: StrongArm Technologies is changing the shape of industrial work safety with their range of products, by providing innovative methods for data collection, assessment and safety solutions. One of their key products is the ErgoSkeleton™, a posture feedback system that gently reminds the body to remain in the correct position at all times, allowing users to lift heavier weights with less risk of injury.

And New Lab, located in the historic Brooklyn Navy Yard Building 128 is a 7,800 square metre multidisciplinary design, prototyping and advanced manufacturing hub. It houses 80 companies and is unique in supporting entrepreneurs working in advanced technologies, including robotics, AI, connected devices, nanotechnology and urban tech.

It’s clear to see why there is such a buzz about Brooklyn. There is a real sense that these community-led organisations and high-tech start-ups are redefining the way companies in the 21st century should be doing business.
